Barns Challenge – Shots of barns. November 22, 2020
-
- Dan Hyde – A typical “Bank Barn.” Most older barns in the valley were purposely built in the bank of a hillside to allow the farmer to back a wagon in at different levels. A major labor saving feature.
-
- Dan Hyde – Modern barn along Col. John Kelly Rd. With modern machinery no need to build the barn on a hillside.
-
- Dan Hyde – Before 1870, the vents on the sides of barns were the shapes and sizes of windows. Barn across road from Grove’s Mill probably pre-1870.
-
- Dan Hyde – Around 1870 barn builders in the valley elongated the vents and added decorations to the vents. Barn builders developed distinct signature styles to mark their work.
-
- Dan Hyde – Barn in Mifflinburg with elongated vents and decorations to the vents as the builder’s signature style.
-
- Dan Hyde – My friend Sylvia Gleason’s barn. Probably built pre-1870. The vents were later replaced by windows when it was converted to a showroom.
-
- Dan Hyde – Pre-1820 barns in the valley had walls of logs like log cabins. Around 1820 builders used frames and added siding as can seen in this old barn.

-
- Rita Kurtz – I was taking photos of fungi on a tree that was cut down in my yard. I discovered these microscopic sized bugs that I could only see through my camera’s macro lens.
